Keith Simpson from Dorset says:

Your organisation was in the first instance created to ensure that those on lower incomes in this country had good quality food at the lowest possible price. Including charitable donations in the cost of many lines [fair trade] is in conflict with this historic ideal because it makes many of your lines more [not less] expensive than your competitors.

Those on lower incomes or with larger families to support, must in the first instance provide for their own family before thinking about people who they have never even met. It is only those on higher incomes or those with no children to support, that can afford to think about people half way around the world. Your organisation seems therefore, to be aiming to attract these essentially middle class customers at the expence of your historic customer base.

I dont tend to give money to charity on big events such as comic relief because it gets such publicity they dont need my money but the work that the co-operative group does with Love One water is a truly worthy cause that should be congratulated and recognised. The number of people suffering from a lack of clean water and related illnesses only ever seems to rise and yet schemes like this have been in place for many years.

Is it just the increasing population that drives the figure up? i.e. more people but in a decreasing number of geographical locations or some other factor such as migrating populations that keeps the number of people with no water high?
