Direlang Creche – NW0108

Donor: ONE water & The Co-operative
Date installed: 17 August 2007
Location: Verdwaal Village, North West Province, South Africa

The Village of Verdwaal is an informal settlement about an hour from the town of Mafikeng that accommodates about 10 000 residents that were forcibly removed from neighbouring farms during the Apartheid era. Most of the residents live in makeshift shacks with virtually no infrastructure or municipal services being provided.

Water is extremely scarce in the area with just 3 boreholes driven by ageing windmills and about 200 taps being fed by a nearby reservoir.

In recent months, a crack in the reservoir has lead to the supply of water to the taps running dry and two of the windmills have broken down.

The site where a PlayPump® water System was successfully installed replaced one of the broken windmills after establishing that the borehole could provide a long-term sustainable yield and that the water quality was fit for human consumption.

While the PlayPump® site is named after the adjacent crèche that takes care of around 40 children, there are over 200 households in the immediate vicinity that all benefit from the new stable water supply. Children, like Kgomotso from as far away as 2 kilometres visit daily because it is the only play equipment in the area.

The safe supply of water has been a huge help to the crèche which is now able to operate a daily feeding scheme and the caregivers soon hope to start a food garden.

“I come and play here everyday after school because it is so much fun and I know I will be able to collect clean water for my family”
